EU Member States have guaranteed protection for more than half a million asylum seekers in 2017. Almost a third of the beneficiaries were Syrians.
The 28 EU Member States have guaranteed protection for 538,000 asylum seekers in 2017, nearly 25 percent less than in 2016.
In addition, the EU Member States have received around 24,000 refugees who have submitted resettlement applications. The largest group of beneficiaries of protection measures in Europe in 2017 was Syrian citizens, with 175,800 people (33%), followed by a group of Afghan citizens with a total of 100,700 people (12) %).
From Eurostat data in 2017, in Romania, 655 Syrians received asylum, accounting for 49 percent of all those who requested protection measures. The second place is the group of Iraqi citizens with a total of 460 people representing 34 percent, followed by a group of Afghan citizens with 65 people.
At the level of Romania, out of the 1330 asylum applications that received a positive opinion in 2017, 875 received refugee status, 455 citizens received subsidiary protection and no citizen was received for humanitarian reasons.
